Changing dynamic brings implement demand full circle

The pressure on farmers to use fewer chemicals to reduce costs and protect the environment is manifesting itself in a change in demand for the products imported by one Midlands Machinery Show exhibitor.

A family-run company, Terrington Machinery Limited specialises in importing Einboeck machinery, a leading Austrian weeding and hoeing technology manufacturer, originally importing their machines for organic farmers for mechanical weed control 30 years ago.

Mechanical weed control involves using cultivation equipment to physically slice or uproot weeds in the soil, negating the need for chemical use, providing a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution.

Terrington provides up to ten different cultivators for mechanical weed control, including the Vibrostar Springtine Cultivator and the Taifun Universal Fine Cultivator.

“We began in mechanical weed control in the organic sector, and now everything seems to have gone full circle, only this time to more conventional farmers,” says David Coleman, Director of Terrington Machinery.

“The environment is now a big aspect on how farmers and our customers are thinking, they want to move away from chemical solutions and so they come to us for our machinery solutions such as tined weeders and cultivators.

“Einboeck’s machines lend themselves to helping environmental causes, and so as more customers incorporate these kinds of practices into their farming, the kind of machines that we offer are becoming more in demand as they provide exactly what customers are looking for – less chemically-dependent therefore cost-effective farming solutions.”

Despite tough times for farm incomes, Terrington continues to have a good year for business, despite a slow start to which David attributes to the weather.

“Because we are a small, quite compact company that sells top quality machines with a reliable dealership and service network, we still find that there’s demand for us,” says David.

“We’ve also found that even with agricultural policy changes favouring the environment and having impacts on the sector, it’s helped us, not hindered us because Einboeck’s machines have always been made with the environment in mind, so the demand for the machines we deal with has increased.”

Terrington Machinery has exhibited at the Midlands Machinery Show since its inception ten years ago.

“The locality of the show is what has especially appealed to us. Because it’s so close to where we are, it allows us to see a lot of our local customers, mostly from the Norfolk and Lincolnshire areas, which is so important to us, and it’s also great to have the opportunity to meet different customers from across the country too.”

Located in Terrington St Clement, outside of King’s Lynn in Norfolk, Terrington Machinery has been operating as an agricultural and horticultural machinery importer since the mid-1980s, beginning as Coleman Enterprises, becoming Terrington Machinery Limited in the early 1990s, and now supply to around 60 dealers across the country.

Exhibitor stands are still available at the Midlands Machinery Show. Booking is taking place online. Registration for free tickets to the show on 20 and 21 November is also open at www.midlandsmachineryshow.com.
